St John Fisher RC Primary school serves the parish of St John Fisher, which is situated in Haughton Green, Denton, a township of the borough of Tameside. Denton was a centre of the hat making industry until the end of the 1950s.
St John Fisher school and parish are within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Salford. The school opened in 1965 and was originally part of St Mary’s RC parish, Denton. In 1987 a part time morning nursery unit, catering for 26 pupils, was opened and is now an established feature of the school.
The school teaches the tenets of the Roman Catholic faith within the supportive network of the local parish community. The teaching of Religious Education, a distinctive subject, is an important aspect of our school. The practise of our Catholic faith is, therefore, not just a subject on the timetable, but also a code which guides and enriches the whole life of the school.
The school has a great sporting record and attempts to give children as many opportunities as possible to compete in a wide range of sports. In 1997 the school was awarded the BNFL School Sports Award for Special Achievement and later received the Sir Matt Busby Award. There are often coaches coming into school from Tameside Sports Development unit, St Thomas More and more recently from Ashton Lacrosse club.
St John Fisher Primary although still considered a small school has grown over the years . The most recent development was in 2006 with the completion of the new ASD Resource Base. The staff and pupils made their final trips from Denton Central to their new resource at St John Fisher.
Our Online Historical Collection
The school’s Golden Jubilee was on 10th May 2015 and to help celebrate the special occasion, we create an online collection of photographs, newspaper articles and other interesting stuff looking back over the decades.
We’d love you to get involved, so if you have any information, stories, or articles relating to our inaugural school year, back in 1965, or from around that time we’d love you to share them! Just contact us and we will add your information to this historical celebration collection. Similarly, if you have any memorabilia, dating from 1965, could you please bring it to school, where, with your permission, we will photocopy it, then return it for safe-keeping.
