Physical Education
At St John Fisher R.C Primary School we aim to provide children with the opportunity to participate, compete in and enjoy a wide variety of school sport. Our vision is to create a positive environment in which children feel involved, engaged, challenged and safe. Our Physical Education curriculum inspires all our pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically demanding activities. It promotes physical skillfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. Physical education provides opportunities for our pupils to be creative in such areas as dance and devising their own games. There are plenty of opportunities for children to be competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals, in groups and teams. By giving pupils the opportunities to compete in sport and other activities it enables pupils to build character and help embed values such as fairness and respect.
We would like our children to develop their physical ability, tactical knowledge, leadership capacity, fitness and team work. We hope that our children will go on to be sporting stars of the future, at all levels and in a wide variety of sports.
All Pupils participate in two hours of PE per week through which we develop the areas of activity as set out in the National Curriculum – Dance; Games; Gymnastics; Athletics; OAA and Swimming. In Year 4 all children are given the opportunity to swim at Denton Baths and we aim for all pupils leaving the school to be able to swim at least 25m confidently & competently and be able to perform safe-self rescue. For assessing our children, we have a subject specific assessment system based on the 'head, hearts, hands' model. This model gives a hollistic assessment of the children taking into account all the areas of the National Curriculum.
PE and Sport is an extremely important part of our school life. One of our aims is for every child to have represented St John Fisher in a competitive sporting event by the time they leave us for High School. We value the skills and attitudes that sport brings and we enjoy seeing children flourish and developing confidence. St John Fisher pupils get the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sporting activities throughout the year as well as the opportunity to compete in a number School Games competitions and TCSSA competitions.
We also offer children a number of club links to local sports clubs so they can further their interests outside of school as well as a wide variety of extra-curricular sports clubs run in school.
Currently, we are extremely proud to hold the prestigious Quality Mark with Distinction award from the Association for PE as well as currently being a Platinum school for our School Games Mark.
